BOSTON (Feb. 5, 2018) – Kathryn Hautanen has been appointed director of the Center for Health Experience Design, an organization providing a base for organizations to connect and generate a shared understanding of problems faced in health care experience design and collaborate around solutions.
The Center (CXHD) was founded by the design agency Mad*Pow and has led collaborations that included partners such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts Health Quality Partners, Cigna, Muskegon Family Care, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Behavioral Health Innovators (BHI).

Her energy will be a great contribution to CHXD’s mission of catalyzing innovation efforts with organizations across the health ecosystem. At a time when health organizations are wondering what Amazon will be up to in health, the time is now to truly design our businesses and explore partnerships that will deliver value to the people the health system serves.”
At Deloitte, Hautanen was a senior manager at the Deloitte Greenhouse Innovation Lab and at Kaiser Permanente she was in the Innovation & Advanced Technology group in at the company’s Garfield Health Care Innovation Center. In addition to her work at Deloitte and Kaiser Permanente, Hautanen also held positions at Synopsys and Intel. She received her BS in Physics at the University of Massachusetts, then an MS in Materials Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, an SM in Nuclear Engineering from MIT, and an MBA in Design Strategy from the California College of the Arts.
The Center accelerates the innovation process by working closely with key industry leaders within Affinity Communities to engage Center members to identify and complete projects that help people to heal and flourish. CHXD also serves as a training and educational resource to health organizations to help strengthen their strategic design and experience innovation competencies, thereby enabling them to improve health experiences for the people they serve.
