Root Causes: Overcoming Barriers to Health Equity

When we talk about designing for “health," we usually mean health care. This definition of health focuses our interventions on clinical measures of physical well-being such as blood pressure, HbA1c, and weight. However, the focus on these narrowly defined metrics can prevent us from addressing the root causes of health problems which often stem from social determinants such as socioeconomic status, housing, and employment. By widening our scope, we begin to discover systemic barriers to health equity at the community level. Come hear how designers and communities can play a key role co-creating solutions to actualize this broader definition of health and craft new tools to address the deep-seated root causes of health inequities.
