HXR Design for Health Award Winner

A winner was revealed in the fourth Design for Health Challenge, and a new gauntlet was thrown during Mad*Pow’s Health Experience Refactored conference.

Health Payment Systems of Milwaukee received the award for its successful design of “A Bill You Can Understand.” The streamlined bill, along with its companion mobile-friendly online platform, was recognized as “having brought good patient-focused design to market,” according to Amy Cueva, founder and chief experience officer of Mad*Pow.

Accepting the award, HPS President and COO Terry Rowinski noted the impetus for the design was the founder of his company being diagnosed with cancer and the resulting “shoebox full of bills.”

Now, “With one bill, nothing is a surprise,” he said.

Concurrently, Jody Holtzman, senior vice president of market innovation at AARP, announced the Caregiver Quality of Life Challenge.

He noted that in the United States alone 40 million caregivers provide 37 billion hours of unpaid caregiving, representing a lost $522 billion in income if calculated at the average hourly rate for such workers.

The challenge is to create innovative solutions that help caregivers by addressing their level of caregiving burden, finding available resources to ease the burden, and develops ways to connect with others to build and strengthen support systems.

First prize in the challenge is $10,000; second prize is $7,000; and third prize is $3,000.

Deadline for submissions is September 15, 2017, with winners announced October 1, 2017.
