The Eco-Friendly UX Designer: Build Sustainable Websites and Reduce your Carbon Footprint

The internet has a massive carbon footprint - if it were it’s own country, it would be the 6th largest in the world in terms of energy use. The humble web designer has a surprisingly important role to play in reducing this and making a meaningful contribution to the fight against climate change.

We’ll look at:

- The carbon footprint of the internet, and how to calculate your share
- Shaving bytes to reduce CO2 - and make clients and customers happier to boot
- Working green: how to reduce the carbon footprint of doing design (from client travel to Post-its)
- Green hosting: how much can it really save, and what are your options
- Design for good: how designers and founders world-wide are turning their talents to tackling climate change

James is an Experience Design Director at Mad*Pow. He organizes an annual conference on design, inclusion and sustainability www.Sustainableux.com , and he wrote one “Sustainable Web Design” for A List Apart (http://alistapart.com/article/sustainable-web-design).
